by Bradley TorreanoBorn and raised in the forests of Pennsylvania, Atlantis Black didn't decide to step into the music industry until she first heard P.J. Harvey. Fascinated by the British chanteuse's gothic indie rock and emotionally raw approach, Black made a stop in New Orleans before buying a guitar and heading out to Los Angeles. Writing for over a year in her apartment, she moved back to Pennsylvania to finish school before heading out to the East Coast. Ending up in New York City, she began playing solo acoustic sets around the East Village. Her dark and passionate music began to get a good response, and she started moving between acoustic and electric sets as she played bigger and bigger clubs in the city. Putting together her own debut EP in 2001, she put out the record herself and gave it a limited release in local record shops and at shows. Keeping a day job as a cartographer to fund her projects, the next step was a more widely released record. After an appearance at the annual CMJ Music Marathon that fall, she started recording another EP. Released the next year, In My Bed marked the next collection from the singer/songwriter.
