Wil Bolton is an artist and composer based in Liverpool, UK. He has been producing melodic electronica and IDM under the name Cheju since 2004, blending warm synth tones, crunchy broken beats and layered atmospheric textures. His work as Cheju has seen him have CD albums on labels such as Unlabel, U-Cover, Boltfish and Distant Noise as well as EPs and compilation appearances on labels including Static Caravan, Smallfish Records, Awkward Silence, October Man Recordings, Rednetic, Symbolic Interaction and Interchill. He is also co-owner of electronica label Boltfish Recordings and has performed live at venues including the Glade Festival, Sunrise Festival, Big Chill House, InSpiral Lounge, Synergy Project, STFU and GlitchNight.
Since 2007 he has also worked as an artist, predominantly using sound as a medium, sometimes enhanced with video and photography. His artworks combine electronic tones with digitally processed acoustic sounds including field recordings and musical instruments. He has produced several site-specific commissions and is particularly interested in the resonance of spaces, their history and atmosphere, and wider notions of place and memory. It is through this approach that Wil has had the opportunity to present his work in locations such as Tate Liverpool and the National Trust manor house, Oxburgh Hall.
Now on Hibernate, Wil Bolton presents 'Time Lapse', which is the debut CD release under his own name. This combines the warm and emotive electronic melodies of his Cheju output with the more minimal drones and field recordings-based sensibility of his sound art work. Melodies are still integral to the music but are more subtle, fragmented, and submerged among beds of droning ambient textures and environmental sounds.
