Tangled Thoughts of Leaving emerged from the shadows of the live scene in Perth, Western Australia with the release of their 2008 EP, Tiny Fragments. By way of a piano-led amalgamation of prog, metal, post-rock, jazz, and noise, TToL have - as cliche as the term is - created their own sound: intensely heavy, intricate, relentless and epic. While Tiny Fragments attracted attention from reviewers across Australia and online, it’s as an intense and fiercely engaging live act that TToL have built their reputation.
Tiny Fragments was designed to be a challenging listen - unapologetically progressive and relentless in it’s constant changes in direction, never allowing the listener to settle in a comfort zone. The 3-part, 18-minute title track is the centerpiece of both the EP and the Tangled Thoughts live show - painstakingly constructed from a multitude of small concepts and ideas.
In 2009, Tangled Thoughts of Leaving released a Split CD with Sydney’s sleepmakeswaves. The release exposed TToL to sleepmakeswaves’ east coast Australian fan base, as well as a huge global online audience. While Tiny Fragments focused on intensity, TToL’s two tracks on the split showcased a greater understanding of song writing and subtlety. A Vexing Predicament won 2009 West Australian Music Association Experimental Song of the Year, and The World is a Deaf Machine was acclaimed as one of the best tracks of the year by international post-rock website The Silent Ballet.
While drawing on the influence of film scorers Philip Glass, Clint Mansell, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis at their most delicate and precise moments, it is when TToL harness the inspiration of Isis, Dillinger Escape Plan and Cult of Luna that they are at their most crushing. Traditional song structures are thrown out the window as the songs wind their way to an epic and cathartic conclusion.
Tangled Thoughts of Leaving are currently recording for their debut album, destined for al 2010 release.
