Paul Schoenfield (b. 1947) was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and began studying music at the age of six. He continued his education at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the University of Arizona, studying piano principally with Ozan Marsh and Rudolf Serkin and composition with Robert Muczynski. Schoenfield has since been based alternately in the midwestern United States and Israel: he taught in Toledo, Ohio, lived on a kibbutz in Israel, and was a freelance composer and pianist in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. He currently divides his time between Israel and Cleveland, Ohio.
Schoenfield has received grants and commissions from the American Composers Forum, Cleveland Orchestra, Juilliard School of Music, National Endowment for the Arts, Rockefeller Foundation, Soli Deo Gloria of Chicago, and many others. Current projects include works for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, and the Juilliard School of Music's 100th anniversary festival. Schoenfield's music has been recorded on the Angel, BMG, Decca, EMI, innova, Koch International Classics, New World, and Vanguard Classics labels.
