To be a musician, to be an artist, you have to have something to say about the human experience - happiness, sadness, loneliness, desire ... That is my vision and what I try to bring to my 'oeuvre,' my work. Learning how to express that and absorbing the education involved takes many, many years. Since I was a young girl, music has been a major influence in my life. From that foundation, my music education began.
My father played trumpet in what he called the New Orleans - Chicago circuit before WWII. He had the good fortune to jam with the Dorsey Brothers. He knew good jazz, and I grew up listening to the masters, from Louis Armstrong, Pete Fountain, to Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Buddy Rich, Ramsey Lewis. My mother is from Mexico. We also listened to Spanish guitar and I was smitten with Spanish rhythms. It was with Sergio Mendez and Brazil '66 that I began to uncover my own musical tastes. A yen to perform started when I was very young. I crooned along with my brother's recordings of Streisand. Her influence channeled my musical interests because in time, I began to listen

to the tone and creativity in other great singers - Judy Garland, Rosemany Clooney, Sarah Vaughan, Sammy Davis. Davis could lead an entire big band with his vocal certainty and rythmic push. His version of Love Me or Leave Me is eternal. Each of those artists is so different, but they all have one thing in common. They know how to express the human experience. That is the star that guides me.
