He later formed his own band (the Haphazards) with brothers Tony and Ronnie. In the '70s, he co-founded the New South, with J.D. Crowe, Doyle Lawson, Red Allen and Bobby Slone. After leaving the band in 1976 (Ricky Skaggs replaced him), Rice toured with Dickey Betts. His first solo album, Hurricanes and Daydreams (1985), was followed by Time Machine.
