by Charlotte DillonEnnis Sisters is an Irish style folk group made up of three real sisters, Maureen, Karen, and Teresa Ennis -- listed in order of birth. All three are gifted singers, as well as musicians. Maureen, the oldest, is a guitarist and songwriter. The middle-born Karen plays both the tin whistle and flute, and does step dancing. The youngest of the family trio, Teresa, also step dances, as well as playing the bodhran. By the time the sisters were in their early twenties, their group had already recorded a few albums, completed a television Christmas special, signed with a major label, and won several awards.
Maureen, Karen, and Teresa were born in Newfoundland and raised on traditional Irish type songs. They began performing for family and friends, and then landing local gigs in pubs. Festivals and touring followed, fans increasing with each energetic performance. In 1997 Ennis Sisters recorded their first album, Red Is the Rose. The excellent debut made the music world take notice, and earned the sisters the MIA Folk Album of the Year Award. The next year found them adding Female Artists of the Year and Group of the Year awards to their growing list of accomplishments. In 1998, a sophomore album, Christmas on Ennis Road, appeared in time to warm holiday hearts. The joyful album also landed Maureen, Karen, and Teresa their own Christmas Special on CBC television, giving them the chance to reach a whole new fan base.
When the new millennium arrived, Ennis Sisters released a third album simply titled Ennis Sisters 3 -- which earned them another Album of the Year award. A year later Warner Music Canada signed the sisters and work on a new album began. Some of the tracks on this talented trio's recordings include "Lord of the Dance," "Rainy Days," "If Anything Happened to You," "When Tomorrow Comes," "Can't Stop the Dance," "Never Puts His Fiddle Down," and "Forever Love."
