Throughout a musical career that stretches back almost fifty years, Maria Muldaur has embraced jug band music, folk, country, jazz, gospel, pop, soul, blues, and who knows how many other American roots approaches. She is a singer’s singer, someone who engages directly with the technical problems of each song, and makes a perfect match between her seductive alto and the requirements of the melody and the lyrics.To record Steady Love, Muldaur travelled down to the rich environs of New Orleans, where so much of the music she loves has either been born or transformed. Not strictly a blues album, Steady Love includes New Orleans R&B, gospel, and a little bit of folk music in its mix. Still, it’s been a long time since Muldaur has made a record this steeped in the blues.
