芭比娃娃的故事要從1959年講起。Ruth Handler，芭比娃娃的創(chuàng)始人注意到自己的女兒Barbara喜歡玩一些紙質(zhì)的玩偶，并把這些玩偶想象成為各種人物。Ruth意識(shí)到，玩具市場上銷售的都是嬰兒玩偶，也許小女孩們需要一個(gè)玩偶來激發(fā)自己的靈感，思考長大后成為怎樣的人物。這就是芭比娃娃產(chǎn)生最初的想法。緊接著，這些十幾歲的時(shí)尚模特產(chǎn)生了，Ruth將這些玩偶以自己女兒的名字命名為：芭比（Barbie）。
Charlotte Johnson，芭比娃娃第一個(gè)時(shí)尚設(shè)計(jì)師所有的靈感都是來自于巴黎的時(shí)尚界。60年代，芭比娃娃發(fā)型的靈感則是來自于美國第一夫人——Jacqueline Kennedy。娃娃的設(shè)計(jì)隨時(shí)間逐漸進(jìn)步，不僅可以隨意扭動(dòng)腰部，腿部也能夠彎曲。
到了70年代，芭比娃娃成為美國流行明星，不僅繼承了巴黎時(shí)尚的造型，同樣也有其他的造型，如當(dāng)時(shí)流行的海灘造型。第一屆官方芭比娃娃大會(huì)于1980年召開，同時(shí)，芭比娃娃還推出了黑人娃娃和西班牙娃娃，國際系列娃娃自此上市。
90年代，芭比娃娃的設(shè)計(jì)來自于全球各個(gè)偉大的時(shí)裝設(shè)計(jì)師，如Christian Dior、Vera Wang等。2000年以后，芭比娃娃的設(shè)計(jì)越來越多，不僅推出了時(shí)尚芭比系列，還推出了好萊塢電影明星系列。

Since 1959, Barbie has been everything from an astronaut to a veterinarian, and her image has graced lunch boxes, makeup, coloring books, and everything in between, so it was only a matter of time before Mattel's plastic queen ventured into pop music. The first album attributed to Barbie was 1991's The Look, a collection of pop songs from the time covered by session musicians. Barbie fell silent until 1998's Beyond Pink, which is credited to Barbie and her friends Teresa and Christie and features original songs that sound inspired by the Spice Girls and other acts from the late '90s teen pop boom. It was in the early 2000s that Barbie music really took off, with a number of soundtracks to Barbie animated movies being released. Barbie Hit Mix and Barbie Hit Mix 2, Kidz Bop-like collections of kids singing along to pop songs, were also issued. The movie Barbie: Fairytopia was turned into a theatrical production, Barbie Live in Fairytopia; its original cast recording arrived in 2007.
