Northcape is the ongoing work of the self-taught British artist Alastair W. Brown (currently living in Warwickshire, England), making instrumental, electronic music that ranges between melodic electronica, IDM and ambient.
The music is intended to evoke environments, landscapes and memory rather than focussing on the technology and techniques used. Northcape is not scared to experiment but is not concerned whether the music fits into any particular sub-genre, and in the process has developed a clean, distinctive and strongly melodic sound that may well appeal to fans of like-minded artists such as Boards of Canada, Ulrich Schnauss and Global Communication. This is electronica that avoids over-complexity and is aimed at expressing ideas in the most natural way possible. Although most tracks don’t have lyrics, they are all drawn strongly from personal experience. Click here to read reviews of Northcape’s music.
Northcape has been producing electronic music for quite some time, initially on a single Yamaha synthesiser before progressing to his current software-based system. Several previous albums including ‘Detach’ were self-released online, with a steadily growing following (over 100,000 plays on last.fm alone). Northcape has been played at The London Glitchnight, received repeated airplay on a number of internet radio stations including soma.fm and Dandelion Radio, the radio station inspired by the late John Peel, and was interviewed by Computer Music Magazine as part of a feature on lo-fi electronica. Following a well-received EP “Some Bright Valley” released through long-running and well-respected netlabel monotonik (sadly now on hiatus) the critically-acclaimed 2010 album “Captured From Static” is the culmination of an extended period of work widening and deepening the Northcape sound. It is released on US independent label Sun Sea Sky Productions (present artists include Boy Is Fiction, Boc Scadet and Melorman, past releases include the classic ‘Garmonia’ by Lights Out Asia). The album was mastered by Audible Oddities (M3rck, Kranky and other labels).
