NLC started in July 1989 as a duo (Angustère & Julien Ash). They released the CD single “Lost Sand Divinities”, the double-tape boxed set “Période Taoiste” and the tape “Schizolithe” (in a 2 kg reinforced concrete box). The same duo also released the tape “Dieu est Gros” (in a wooden box) under the name “Triste Nuit Pour” and the tape “Ecmnesia” under the name “Maelstrom”. In December 1990, Angustère left the band. After the solo-CD “Incandescent”, NLC started again, but had become Ash's solo project. Since then, a lot of “guests” took part to this project : Frédéric Bailly (Kod), Frédéric Truong (Leitmotiv), Olga Zimovets (a russian opera diva), Christoph Heemann (H.N.A.S.), Mayling (a progressive rock composer), P. Bur (a techno composer), Philippe Joncquel (bassist and sound engineer), PY Lebeau and L Houdijk (Hide & Seek) etc...

In 1989-90, the music of NLC was classified as “ambient industrial”. After the split, Ash's compositions became more melodic. “Vestiges” was the testament of the pure experimental period of NLC, even if some recent releases may be very confidential (for ex. the vinyl suite “Le Lieu Noir”). The CD “Allegro Vivace” started the Neo-Classical period of NLC, which may not be finished today... In 1999, the collaboration with bass player Philippe Joncquel began, culminating in 2001 with “the link cutters”. The music of NLC became “poppy” but still mainly instrumental. As lots of people said “NLC makes a kind of imaginary film music”, NLC's album, “l(fā)es grands saules” (2002) , is an audio movie, with a story, characters, dialogs. However, even if each record by NLC has his own “concept”, the path followed always remains the same...

In NLC's discography, you can notice three particular releases : The O?kema Trilogy, which deals with erotic visions : Angels of Oikema + Spiritus Rex + Secret of Oikema. The Clean/Unclean twin CDs, simultaneously released. The vinyl suite “Le Lieu Noir” : five different albums containing exclusive studio material, ambient and confidential music as well as new experimentations. NLC never played live. All their records are in limited edition, a lot of items not available anymore. Nevertheless, they are described as “the most famous minimalist/avant guarde french band” (SUB magazine).
